Efficiency

Efficiency is not so much a principle of economics, but a measure of how well we convert resources into benefits. Economists are concerned about efficiency because the ultimate aim of economics is to maximise the benefit from a given set of resources. If we use resources inefficiently, then the benefits to society will be less than if we use those resources efficiently – quite literally, society will be poorer than it could be.
